Australia - In 2024, Warner Bros. Movie World in Australia is set to unveil a groundbreaking addition to its lineup: a Wizard of Oz-themed area.
This new precinct promises to transport guests into the enchanting world of L. Frank Baum’s beloved classic, brought to life through the lens of the iconic 1939 film. The Wizard of Oz land represents a significant investment in the park’s future, blending cutting-edge ride technology with immersive storytelling to create a one-of-a-kind family experience.
Predecessor: Arkham Asylum – Shock Therapy
The site chosen for the Wizard of Oz precinct was previously occupied by Arkham Asylum – Shock Therapy, a popular but aging thrill ride that was closed and demolished in 2019. This transformation from a dark, intense roller coaster to a whimsical, family-friendly area marks a significant shift in the park’s offerings, aiming to attract a broader audience.
Development and Announcement
In June 2022, Warner Bros. Movie World announced the development of the Wizard of Oz precinct, a $40 million investment designed to rejuvenate the park and provide a unique, immersive experience. This project, executed in partnership with Warner Bros. Themed Entertainment, focuses on integrating advanced ride systems with detailed theming to faithfully recreate the magical world of Oz.
Opening
Scheduled to open later in 2024, the Wizard of Oz area is expected to be a major draw for the park, enhancing its appeal to families and boosting visitor numbers. The new attractions aim to provide experiences that are both thrilling and accessible to younger guests.
Ride Experience
The centerpiece of the new area includes two main attractions, both manufactured by Vekoma:
- The Flight of the Wicked Witch: This suspended family coaster features a track length of 454 meters and reaches a height of 19 meters, with top speeds of 67 km/h. Themed around the Wicked Witch’s castle, the ride includes dynamic elements like flying monkeys and offers a smooth, enjoyable experience for riders of all ages.
- Kansas Twister: A family boomerang racer, this ride boasts two duelling tracks measuring 225 and 220 meters in length. With a maximum height of 22 meters and speeds up to 58 km/h, the Kansas Twister simulates the tornado that sweeps Dorothy away to Oz, providing a fun and competitive ride experience.
Immersive Theming
Beyond the rides, the Wizard of Oz area will feature extensive theming to fully immerse guests in the world of Oz. The area will include projection mapping, sculptures, and detailed facades, allowing visitors to follow the Yellow Brick Road, explore Dorothy’s Kansas farm, and marvel at the Emerald City. These elements aim to create a vibrant and magical environment that captures the essence of the classic story.
