Florida - At the 2024 D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, held at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Disney announced several significant developments across its theme parks. During the “Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase,” Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences at the Walt Disney Company, revealed an exciting addition to Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort. A new area inspired by Pixar Animation Studios’ Cars franchise is set to be introduced within a reimagined section of Frontierland.
This new “Cars”-themed area will bring beloved characters Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater to life in a way that immerses guests in the world of Radiator Springs. The announcement, made with the help of Tow Mater via video call, highlighted the connection between the adventurous spirit of the American West and the themes of the Cars films. As D’Amaro explained, this area will embody the frontier ethos of self-reliance, exploration, and striving toward success, a perfect fit for the Frontierland setting.
The new expansion will feature two attractions. The first is a thrilling rally race that will take guests through mountain trails, past geysers, and, in true Tow Mater fashion, through mudholes. This attraction promises an exciting experience as riders navigate wild terrain, capturing the high-octane spirit of the Cars franchise.
The concept art for the new Cars-themed land at Magic Kingdom reveals some distinct design choices that set it apart from the existing Cars attractions at other Disney parks. The artwork shows rally cars instead of the sleek race cars featured in Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure.
This shift in vehicle design suggests a focus on rugged, off-road racing, which aligns with the adventure and frontier spirit of Frontierland. The land’s theme also appears to blend seamlessly with the existing Frontierland aesthetic, incorporating natural elements like wood and stone walls into the architecture.
Concept art for the new Cars-themed attractions at Magic Kingdom shows the cars exploring various landscapes independently, suggesting an immersive journey through different terrains, possibly reminiscent of the first part of the Radiator Springs Racers attraction at Disney California Adventure.
However, another piece of concept art depicts the cars racing against each other and crossing a finish line, which may indicate that, like Radiator Springs Racers, the attraction will feature a competitive element. This setup involves an initial, independent scenic ride followed by a thrilling race where two cars compete side by side.
The second attraction is designed with younger guests in mind, offering a more family-friendly experience. While specific details about this attraction were not fully disclosed, it is expected to be an interactive and enjoyable ride that captures the charm and humor of the Cars universe, making it accessible for all ages.
The new Cars-themed land at Magic Kingdom will build on the success of existing Cars attractions across Disney Parks worldwide. Notable examples include Radiator Springs Racers, a high-speed ride in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure, which immerses guests in the world of Radiator Springs. Additionally, attractions like Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree and Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters in Disney California Adventure, along with Cars Quatre Roues Rallye at Disneyland Paris, and Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, demonstrate the franchise’s broad appeal.
The Cars franchise, created by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures, began with the original Cars film in 2006. The film tells the story of Lightning McQueen, a racecar who learns valuable life lessons about friendship, humility, and community in the small town of Radiator Springs. The film was a commercial success, grossing over $460 million worldwide, and it spawned two sequels: Cars 2 in 2011 and Cars 3 in 2017. The franchise expanded further with spin-offs like Planes and television series, including Cars Toons and the more recent Cars on the Road on Disney+.
Construction on the new Cars area is scheduled to begin in early 2025, marking a significant addition to Magic Kingdom’s offerings.
