California - During the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Disney announced significant expansions coming to Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure. As part of the Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase, Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences at the Walt Disney Company, revealed that the Marvel-themed area will double in size, featuring two new attractions that will immerse guests deeper into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
One of the most anticipated additions is the Stark Flight Lab, a new ride that will give guests the opportunity to experience the thrills of being a superhero firsthand. In this attraction, guests will sit in two-person pods and be deployed to a test station within Tony Stark’s lab.
The ride will simulate a high-speed flight, with the pods being grabbed and whirled around by robotic arms. This innovative ride system is designed to deliver an immersive experience that combines cutting-edge technology with the high-octane action fans expect from the Marvel franchise.
The Stark Flight Lab attraction at Disney California Adventure appears to be an evolution of a ride system that has been employed in several other theme parks around the world. This type of attraction utilizes robotic arms to create dynamic, immersive experiences for guests. One of the earliest examples of this technology is the “Dances with Robots” attraction at Futuroscope in France, where guests are strapped into seats attached to robotic arms that move in synchronization with music. Similarly, Legoland Deutschland and Legoland Billund have rides where visitors experience a customizable ride sequence on robotic arms.
Robotic arms are also a key feature in the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey attractions found in Universal Studios parks worldwide, where they are used to simulate the sensation of flying alongside Harry Potter. Additionally, the Batman: Knight Flight ride at Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi uses robotic arms to give guests the experience of being Batman. This technology is expected to be further utilized in the upcoming Monsters Unleashed attraction at Universal’s Epic Universe
A highlight of Stark Flight Lab is the involvement of Robert Downey Jr., who will reprise his iconic role as Tony Stark. His presence in the attraction is expected to add an extra layer of authenticity and excitement, making it a must-experience for Marvel fans. This marks a continuation of Downey Jr.’s long-standing association with the character, bringing the beloved Iron Man back to life in a new and interactive way.
In addition to Stark Flight Lab, the expansion will include another major attraction, Avengers Infinity Defense, which will take guests on a multi-world adventure across the Marvel Multiverse. This ride will involve traveling to iconic locations such as Asgard, Wakanda, and New York City, as guests team up with Marvel heroes to battle the villain King Thanos, who has gained control of technology that allows travel between different worlds.
