The Netherlands - As the opening of the highly anticipated Efteling attraction Danse Macabre approaches, the Dutch theme park is unveiling more secrets about its latest spooky experience.
Set to open on October 31, 2024, Danse Macabre is set in a dark abbey, offering visitors a hauntingly immersive experience. Recent reveals showcase the residents of this eerie world, including the main character, Joseph Charlatan, a ghostly conductor.
In a video released by Efteling, fans got a glimpse of the attraction’s animatronics, including Charlatan, who commands the orchestra from his organ. The character’s eerie presence is a direct nod to the late Ton van de Ven’s early sketches for the park’s now-retired Spookslot attraction, which Danse Macabre replaces. The footage also teased other elements, such as dancing balustrades, moving musical instruments, and an abundance of skulls, setting the tone for a chilling experience.
The ride itself is centered around the famous classical composition Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns, using a new ride system featuring a large rotating disc and spinning choir benches. These features, which are currently being tested, will give visitors the sensation of dancing along to the eerie melody as the show unfolds. According to Efteling’s engineers, the movement, in combination with music and lighting effects, will deliver an unforgettable thrill.
Beyond the ride experience, Efteling has worked diligently to ensure that the entire Danse Macabre area, named Huyverwoud, is fully immersive. Project leader Laura Evers revealed more details about the Cabinet of the Missing, a key storyline element in the area. The cabinet serves as a memorial to musicians who mysteriously vanished and includes personal mementos like instruments and photographs. This storytelling piece adds depth to the attraction’s lore, pricking guests’ curiosity about the fate of these characters.
The Danse Macabre attraction isn’t just about thrilling rides; it incorporates Efteling’s signature attention to detail and atmosphere. The surrounding area includes shops, dining locations, and even restrooms themed to fit the haunting narrative. In addition, the entire area employs sustainable technology to manage heating and lighting in an eco-friendly manner.
The attraction is designed with inclusivity in mind. Efteling has ensured that guests with disabilities can enjoy the same thrilling experience as others, with dedicated accessible routes and modified versions of the show in certain areas of the attraction.
As the final preparations for the grand opening on October 31 draw near, the park is focusing on finishing touches, testing movements, and fine-tuning the attraction’s audio and lighting. Efteling’s team, including lead engineer Joost Schetters, expressed excitement about the unique nature of the attraction. According to Schetters, Danse Macabre combines cutting-edge technology with timeless storytelling, promising to deliver an experience that will leave guests wanting to return for more.
