Florida - At the 2024 D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event held at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Disney announced a new and highly anticipated expansion for Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort. During the “Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase,” Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences at The Walt Disney Company, revealed plans for a dedicated “Villains at Magic Kingdom” Land, a dark and twisted realm where some of Disney’s most iconic antagonists will take center stage.
Villains have long held a special place in Disney lore, often serving as the unforgettable forces of conflict in some of the company’s most beloved films. Now, for the first time, these characters will have a land of their own at Magic Kingdom.
According to D’Amaro, this new area will allow guests to immerse themselves in the world of Disney Villains, where the classic notion of “happily ever after” is turned on its head.
“Villains at Magic Kingdom” Land is expected to feature two major attractions, as well as themed dining and shopping experiences that capture the essence of Disney’s most notorious antagonists.
While specific details about the attractions have yet to be fully disclosed, D’Amaro hinted that the possibilities for storytelling within this land are vast, with each villain bringing their own unique brand of chaos and intrigue.
Also the concept art shared during the D23 presentation offers intriguing hints. The artwork features a roller coaster winding through rugged mountains and plunging underwater, suggesting that one of the major attractions could be a thrilling roller coaster ride themed around Disney’s most notorious villains. The imagery evokes a dark, adventurous atmosphere, potentially combining elements of both speed and suspense, aligning with the villainous theme of the new land.
The design of the new land will likely draw inspiration from the dark and gothic aesthetic often associated with Disney’s villains. References to classic films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty, and The Little Mermaid are anticipated, potentially offering guests the opportunity to encounter the Evil Queen, Maleficent, Ursula, and others in an environment that reflects their nefarious deeds.
A promotional video for the new “Villains at Magic Kingdom” Land features an impressive lineup of Disney’s most infamous antagonists. The villains showcased include the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Ursula from The Little Mermaid, Gaston from Beauty and the Beast, Lady Tremaine from Cinderella, Yzma from The Emperor’s New Groove, the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, Jafar from Aladdin, Hades from Hercules, Chernabog from Fantasia, Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, Kaa from The Jungle Book, Captain Hook from Peter Pan, Cruella de Vil from One Hundred and One Dalmatians, King Magnifico from the upcoming film Wish, and Scar from The Lion King. While the video teases these villains, it remains unclear which of them will take center stage in the new land or how prominently they will be featured. This diverse array of characters highlights the vast potential for storytelling within the land, offering the possibility of encounters with some of Disney’s most iconic and feared villains.
The planned “Villains at Magic Kingdom” land appears to be part of a growing trend in theme parks to explore darker, more mysterious themes, much like Universal’s “Dark Universe”, which is being developed as part of the new Epic Universe park. Both Disney and Universal are tapping into the allure of the sinister and supernatural, offering guests a chance to immerse themselves in worlds that are more scary than the traditional, family-friendly experiences typically associated with these parks. “Villains at Magic Kingdom” Land will bring Disney’s most infamous antagonists to life, creating a realm where darkness and mischief rule, while Universal’s “Dark Universe” is expected to delve into gothic and horror-inspired themes with its classic monsters.
Preparations for the new land are already underway at Magic Kingdom, with Imagineers working to bring this “fearless new vision” to life. As construction progresses, more details are expected to be released, giving Disney enthusiasts a clearer picture of what this thrilling new land will offer when it opens.
