California - During the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Disney unveiled a significant new addition to its lineup of attractions.
Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences at the Walt Disney Company, took the stage during the Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase to announce the first-ever attraction based on Pixar’s beloved film Coco. This new ride is set to be constructed at Disney California Adventure, bringing the vibrant world of Coco to life for park guests.
The announcement marks a major milestone for Coco, which has become one of Pixar’s most cherished films since its release in 2017. The movie, directed by Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, tells the story of Miguel, a young boy with a passion for music, who embarks on a journey to the Land of the Dead during the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos. The film was praised for its rich cultural representation, emotional depth, and memorable music, particularly the song “Remember Me,” which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
The new attraction at Disney California Adventure will invite guests to join Miguel on an adventure through the Land of the Dead, encountering the film’s beloved characters along the way.
According to D’Amaro, Walt Disney Imagineering plans to draw inspiration from classic Disney attractions like Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean. These rides are known for their immersive environments and innovative use of Audio-Animatronics technology, and the Coco attraction is expected to follow in their footsteps by utilizing advanced animatronics to bring the skeletal characters to life in a way that has never been seen before.
The announcement at D23 was punctuated by a surprise appearance from Ernesto de la Cruz, the film’s antagonist and one of the most infamous musicians in the Land of the Dead, who performed briefly before D’Amaro took the stage. This theatrical reveal emphasized the central role that music will play in the new attraction, much like it does in the film.
Construction on the Coco attraction is set to begin in 2026, with further details about the ride’s features and storyline expected to be released as the project progresses. An opening date has not been provided yet.
