Germany - Holiday Park Germany is gearing up to open an exciting new dark ride in 2025, centered on the beloved Smurfs. With over 45 animatronics, this immersive attraction promises to deliver a whimsical and magical journey for families and fans of the iconic blue characters.
Unveiled at the IAAPA Expo Europe in Amsterdam, the project is a collaboration between Holiday Park, the Plopsa Group, and leading creative firms, setting a new benchmark for themed entertainment.
A Magical Transformation: From Burg Falkenstein to Smurfs Adventure
The upcoming dark ride marks a significant transformation of Holiday Park’s classic Burg Falkenstein attraction. Originally a medieval-themed dark ride, the ride system will remain intact while all previous decor has been replaced to bring the Smurfs’ vibrant world to life. Sjors van Roosmalen from Jora Vision, the design firm spearheading the project, revealed exclusive concept art and a digital simulation of ride scenes during the IAAPA Expo Europe. This preview hinted at a high level of detail and creativity that will immerse visitors in the Smurfs’ forest village.
LF Studios, known for its expertise in animatronics, is crafting the figures, including 42 Smurfs, multiple iterations of the villain Gargamel, and his mischievous cat, Azrael. Each Smurf stands at approximately 60 centimeters tall, packed with intricate movement mechanics despite their compact size. Visitors can also expect animated plants and other lively characters that enhance the storytelling experience.
A Smurfs Adventure: Storyline and Ride Experience
The Smurfs dark ride will take visitors on a thrilling adventure as they witness Gargamel’s latest scheme to capture and eliminate the Smurfs using carnivorous plants. The journey will feature a series of dynamic scenes portraying the Smurfs’ attempts to thwart Gargamel and save their village. Early concepts of the ride vehicles depicted them as hollowed-out apples, though this design has been updated for improved functionality and theming.
Holiday Park aims to ensure the ride appeals to all age groups by blending humor, suspense, and an engaging narrative. The mix of physical sets, animatronics, and digital effects will create a rich multi-sensory experience, aligning with the park’s commitment to innovation and family-friendly entertainment.
Holiday Park’s Legacy and Plopsa Group’s Vision
Located in Haßloch, Rhineland-Palatinate, Holiday Park is one of Germany’s longest-standing amusement parks, opening its gates in 1971. Over the decades, the park has attracted visitors with its iconic attractions, including the highly acclaimed Expedition GeForce roller coaster. Acquired by the Plopsa Group in 2010, Holiday Park has since integrated beloved characters from Studio 100’s properties, such as Maya the Bee and Heidi.
The Smurfs dark ride aligns with Plopsa Group’s strategic vision to leverage globally recognized intellectual properties. By transforming Holiday Park’s offerings, the group aims to broaden its appeal across European markets and reinforce its reputation for world-class themed entertainment.
The Smurfs dark ride is scheduled to open in 2025, ushering in a new era of immersive storytelling at Holiday Park. As the debut date nears, more details about the attraction and accompanying events will be unveiled.
