Liseberg Announces Rebuilding of Oceana Water Park Following Devastating Fire

Sweden - In a determined effort to restore and enhance its attractions, Liseberg amusement park has announced plans to rebuild the Oceana Water Park, which was severely damaged by a fire earlier this year.

The decision, confirmed by the park’s Board of Directors on July 17, 2024, follows extensive investigations and clearance work at the site.

The fire, which broke out on February 12, 2024, originated in one of the park’s outdoor slides and quickly spread, resulting in extensive damage. Tragically, one person, construction manager Patrik Gillholm, was reported missing and later confirmed dead, and 16 others sustained injuries.

Despite the setback, Liseberg’s management, led by CEO Andreas Andersen, is committed to moving forward with the project. Andersen emphasized that completing the water park is essential not only for Liseberg but also for Gothenburg’s tourism sector.

“Based on the various scenarios we have developed, there is really no alternative to completing the project. This applies both to Liseberg and Gothenburg as a tourism destination,” Andersen stated.

The park has decided to rebuild Oceana according to its original design principles with some modifications. The reconstruction will begin in the fall, with the goal of opening the water park in 2026. Ongoing investigations into the fire’s cause are expected to conclude by spring 2025.

Until the exact cause is determined and insurance claims are settled, the project will be financed through Liseberg’s investments and potentially additional funding from the city of Gothenburg.

During this challenging period, Liseberg has received significant support from the local community and stakeholders. Kurt Eliasson, chairman of the board, acknowledged this support, stating, “The love that the people of Gothenburg and all of Sweden have shown for the project and Liseberg during this difficult time has been invaluable”.

The rebuilding of Oceana is seen as a vital step in the recovery and future development of Liseberg, ensuring that it remains a key attraction and a symbol of resilience for Gothenburg’s tourism industry.
