California - At the recent D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event held at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Disney unveiled ambitious expansion plans for Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure. During the Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase, Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences at the Walt Disney Company, announced that the size of Avengers Campus will double, featuring two new attractions designed to immerse guests further into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The expansion, which is set to begin construction next year, will introduce a multi-world adventure experience titled “Avengers Infinity Defense.” This attraction will take recruits on a journey across several iconic Marvel locations, including Asgard, Wakanda, and New York City. The storyline revolves around advanced technology that allows the Avengers to travel between worlds, which has fallen into the hands of King Thanos, a powerful alternate-reality version of the Mad Titan who has become a central villain in this new experience.
Guests will have the opportunity to team up with a diverse roster of Marvel superheroes, both big and small, as they attempt to recover the lost technology and thwart King Thanos’s plans. The attraction promises an interactive and dynamic experience, leveraging cutting-edge technology to bring the Marvel Universe to life in new and exciting ways.
The choice of King Thanos as a central antagonist in the new attraction is noteworthy, as he represents an alternate reality where he successfully defeated the Avengers, adding a fresh twist to the familiar narrative. This character was first introduced in Marvel Comics and has since become a symbol of the multiverse’s complexities within the Marvel lore.
At the D23 event, Disney also unveiled the ride vehicle for “Avengers Infinity Defense.” The design, which is currently on display, features a sleek, futuristic aesthetic inspired by the time-travel suits from Avengers: Endgame. The vehicle, dubbed the “Multiworld Transport Vehicle,” is designed to “jump” between worlds, enhancing the immersive experience as guests navigate different realities within the Marvel Universe.
The upcoming “Avengers Infinity Defense” attraction at Disney California Adventure is expected to be a state-of-the-art dark ride, blending physical sets with immersive screen technology. This ride format is similar to other attractions like Transformers: The Ride 3D and The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man at Universal Studios, which combine dynamic 3D visuals with real-world environments to create a seamless and thrilling experience.
Disney has successfully implemented this type of attraction in other parks as well. Most recently, Tokyo DisneySea introduced a similar ride style in its new Fantasy Springs area with Peter Pan’s Never Land Adventure. This ride uses a combination of advanced animatronics, elaborate sets, and high-definition screens to transport guests into the world of Peter Pan, offering a preview of what fans might expect from the “Avengers Infinity Defense” ride.
This expansion follows the successful launch of Avengers Campus in 2021, which has already become a major draw for Disney California Adventure. The current campus includes attractions like WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure and Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, as well as character encounters, themed dining, and shopping experiences.
Josh D’Amaro emphasized the scope and ambition of the project during the presentation, underscoring Disney’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of themed entertainment.
As Disney prepares to break ground on this expansion, with the exact opening year yet to be announced, Marvel fans can anticipate a future where they can step into the roles of superheroes and engage in epic battles that span multiple dimensions.
