Tokyo Disneyland Closes Space Mountain for Major 2027 Rebuild: New Features and Project Details

Japan - Space Mountain at Tokyo Disneyland officially closed on July 31, 2024, marking the beginning of an extensive redevelopment project that will see the ride and its surrounding area transformed over the next several years.

The closure is part of a planned upgrade to Tomorrowland, with the new version of Space Mountain expected to debut in 2027.

The original Space Mountain, which opened in 1983, was a near-identical clone of the version at Disneyland in California. Over the years, it became a beloved attraction for visitors to Tokyo Disneyland.

However, after more than four decades of operation, the decision was made to rebuild the ride from the ground up to meet modern standards and expectations.

Space Mountain 2.0

The new Space Mountain will retain the basic concept of a high-speed indoor roller coaster but will feature a completely redesigned ride system and updated special effects.

The refurbishment is not just about the ride itself; the entire Tomorrowland Square is being redeveloped to create a more immersive and cohesive experience.

The new structure will have a futuristic design, incorporating elements inspired by other Disney attractions, such as TRON Lightcycle Power Run from Shanghai Disneyland.

The goal is to create a more dynamic and visually engaging area that enhances the overall guest experience.

Construction began even before the ride’s closure, with site preparation and groundwork already visible behind the existing structure.

The project is estimated to cost approximately ¥56 billion (about $437 million), reflecting the significant scale of the redevelopment.

The new Space Mountain is expected to feature advanced technology, including modern ride vehicles and cutting-edge special effects that will provide a more thrilling and immersive experience for guests.

During the final months leading up to its closure, Tokyo Disneyland hosted a special event titled “Celebrating Space Mountain: The Final Ignition!”

This event offered fans the opportunity to experience the classic version of the ride one last time, complete with themed entertainment and exclusive merchandise.

The new Space Mountain, set to open in 2027, will be the first major thrill ride addition to Tokyo Disneyland since the Tower of Terror opened in 2006.
